ThermoPro TP-22 Remote Dual-Probe Thermometer Review

ThermoPro TP-22 Remote Dual-Probe Thermometer Review

The ThermoPro TP-22 is a dual-probe wireless remote thermometer with programmable temperature alarms and USDA-approved settings. It also includes a timer function, making it useful for remotely monitoring the internal temperatures and timing of two different meats on your grill.

ThermoPro TP-22 Features

The thermometer comes with two probes; each is 6″ (15cm) long with a kink 4″ (10cm) from the tip. The probes should not be submerged in water while cleaning or exposed to temperatures above 572ºF (300ºC).

The transmitter unit has a single display that toggles back and forth between probe 1 and probe 2, displaying the temperature of each in either Fahrenheit or Celsuis. There is no backlight on the transmitter. The battery compartment has a sealing ring to keep out moisture, but the manufacturer warns against using this unit in the rain.

About the Receiver

The receiver unit displays both probes’ temperatures simultaneously, as well as the temperature alarm settings. If the timer is being used, its value displays on the top line, above the probe temperatures. Each channel has its own alarm setting for an upper temperature limit. There is no lower limit setting. When the temperature reaches the alarm setting, the temperature display for that probe flashes and the backlight illuminates. Temperatures on the receiver can be displayed in either Fahrenheit or Celsius, independent of the transmitter’s setting. This means that you program the transmitter to display Fahrenheit while the receiver displays Celsius.

Target temperatures can be selected from pre-programmed meat and doneness values or set to your preference.

The timer operates in either an up-counter or a down-counter mode. If you set a time value, the counter will count down to zero, displaying a flashing 00:00 and a steady backlight. If the timer is cleared to zero and started, it will count up to 99 hours and 59 minutes, but no alarm will sound.

Fortunately, if the receiver loses signal from the transmitter for over one minute, the receiver will alert the user by displaying dashes in lieu of the temperature reading. After four minutes of lost signal, the receiver will emit one short chirp every four minutes. This short chirp can easily be missed if you are not paying attention. After 30 minutes of lost signal, the receiver will turn itself off unless the timer is running.

Warranty

The build quality of the electronics and the probes is above average. This thermometer is easy to use and provides the basic information that most cooks will want. However, the lack of a lower temperature alarm limit might restrict its utility for some users. The unit is covered by a one-year limited warranty on the electronics and a lifetime warranty on the temperature probes. Contact information, including an e-mail address, website and telephone number, are provided in the owner’s manual and on an enclosed card.

Our Review of the ThermoPro TP-22

We give this unit a Silver Medal for its build quality, performance, ease-of-use, and aesthetics.
