ThermoPro TP-12 Dual Probe Remote Thermometer Review

ThermoPro TP-12 Dual Probe Remote Thermometer Review

The ThermoPro TP-12 is a dual-channel remote food/cooker thermometer with good performance at a low price. It also incorporates an up/down timer that works simultaneously with the temperature monitoring function. There is a grill clip that supports the cooker probe inside the oven.

The transmitter operates on two AAA batteries and supports two independent temperature probes, one for the cooker and one for food, and they are displayed alternately. There is no backlight on the transmitter. The scale, Fahrenheit or Celsius, can be changed independently of the receiver display scale, and the battery compartment is sealed with an O-ring, making it rain-resistant but not submersible.

ThermoPro TP-12 Receiver Modes

Temperature Mode

The ThermoPro TP-12 receiver has two modes: temperature and timer. In the temperature mode, the receiver displays both the cooker and the food temperatures simultaneously, one above the other. The food probe has an upper alarm only which is set by the user. The cooker probe has both an upper and lower alarm, again set by the user. The cooker’s lower alarm is not enabled until the lower limit is exceeded. This prevents the alarm from triggering while the cooker is coming up to temperature. Once enabled, the alarm will sound if the temperature falls below the lower limit or goes above the upper limit.

Setting the alarm limits is a bit awkward, allowing only increasing values until the upper range of the alarm is reached, at which point it will wrap around, beginning at the bottom of the range and counting up again. If you overshoot your target, you have to do another full lap around the range. Fortunately, whatever limit you set will be remembered even if you turn the unit off.

Timer Mode

In the timer mode, it will either count up from zero to 24 hours without an alarm, or count down from an hour/minute value set by the user. When counting down, the display will flash and the beeper will sound when zero is reached. The counter will run, if started, in both the temperature and the timer mode, although the timer value will not be displayed while in the temperature mode. While in the timer mode, only the food temperature and the timer value will be displayed; the cooker temperature won’t be visible although its alarm will still be active.

If communication between the transmitter and the receiver is lost for more than four minutes, the beeper will alert the user by sounding off every four seconds. This is an important feature that will prevent inadvertent overcooking of the food.

Warranty

Like all cabled probes, you must not submerge these while cleaning, so beware. Build quality of the package is about average, and the price is lower than most. The user’s instructions are clear and thorough. You can find the manufacturer’s contact info, including an e-mail address, website, and telephone number in the instructions. Warranty is for one year.

Overall, this is a nice unit with the features one would expect. For the price, you get good performance and value. We’ll give the ThermoPro TP-12 a Silver Medal.
