The ThermoPro Lightning (TP-622) is a folding-type instant-read thermometer that is well-constructed and has the usual feature set found in higher-end products. Its accuracy and speed are middle-of-the-pack.
The ThermoPro Lightning’s Features
This product departs from most of its competitors by using a red LED readout instead of the more usual LCD. I don’t know what impact this might have on the battery life, and the manufacturer doesn’t specify how long the single AAA cell will last.
The display rotates 180° to facilitate left-hand use. There is a button that serves three purposes: freeze the reading for five seconds, change from Fahrenheit to Celsius, and initiate the calibration process.
I tested the thermometer in its as-delivered state. An ice bath read 33.6°F instead of 32°. The measured temp at a known 130°F was 130.3. At 225° the reading was 226.6°. At 325°F, the thermometer read 330.8, a little less accurate than most similar products, although not a huge concern given that few foods will ever reach that temperature.
It took 3 seconds to go from a 32° ice bath to a 209° pot of simmering water. It took 3 seconds to go from 209° to 32° as well. These are good but not great numbers.
The ThermoPro Lightning is rated at IP65, so it should be immune to running water, but it isn’t submersible and not dishwasher safe. This is adequate for most users.
The housing is protected by a hard rubber perimeter that should protect the unit from accidental drops. The unit turns on when the probe is unfolded and off when it is put back into its retaining latch. If left unattended for 90 seconds, it will shut down to conserve battery power. When picked up, it will turn back on automatically if the probe is extended. There is a magnet in the housing that will allow the unit to stick to a refrigerator door or other ferromagnetic surface.
Conclusion

This ThermoPro Lightning is priced in the upper-middle bracket for this type of product. The build quality is above average and the performance is good but not leading edge. Most users will find this a nice addition to their kitchen arsenals.
