Tappecue Airprobe 3 Review And Rating

Tappecue AirProbe 3 Food Thermometer

The Tappecue Airprobe 3 is an evolutionary wireless temperature probe that works in much the same manner as previous Tappecue versions. Its notable difference from earlier models is the reduced diameter: 0.195″ (5mm) versus .238″ (6mm) and slightly longer length: 3.562″ (9cm) versus 3.375″ (8.6cm).

You can use the new probe as a stand-alone thermometer, connecting directly with your Apple or Android smartphone via Bluetooth. The app connects with the probe and the internet, making the temperature measurements visible from the cloud. It can also connect to a Tappecue Touch module that displays the temperatures on its own screen. The probe comes with four colored collars so you can keep track of which probe is which.

Like earlier versions of the wireless probe, it has two sensors: one at the tip of the probe to measure food temperature and another in the handle that measures ambient temp. You must not insert the probe into the food to an etched line on the probe barrel. This protects the internal electronics from temps above 212°F (100°C). The handle end is safe to 572°F (300°C). The manufacturer claims that the probes can be used inside a pressure cooker, although it seems that the maximum temperature of the food might exceed the 212°F (100°C) temp limitation.

This new probe displays the following temperature accuracy with actual and measured temps:
100°F 98°F
125°F 123°F
150°F 149°F
175°F 172°F
200°F 195°F
212°F 206°F

This result is slightly less accurate than its predecessor, the Airprobe 2, but it’s still pretty good, being off by less than six degrees Fahrenheit at the highest temperature in its range. The manufacturer claims that the probe will function for 48 hours on a single charge.

The app can display the temperatures of up to four probes simultaneously. Since each probe has two sensors, eight different temps can be monitored. The instantaneous temperature and a graph of temp vs. time are displayed for each sensor. You can set a target temp for each sensor, and, when reached, will announce, “Check your meat.” Furthermore, you can set your own target or choose a doneness level for various food types. You can also set minimum and maximum temps and receive alerts if the temp exceeds this range.

Overall, this is an easy thermometer to use, and the app is simple and straightforward. The directions are adequate. The build quality is good. The manufacturer’s contact info is via its website and/or a QR code. I give the Tappecue Airprobe 3 a Gold Medal for quality and ease of use.
