Often called “pork pullers,” “bear claws” or “wolf claws,” these sharp hand extenders make light work of pulling or shredding smoked pork. They also make it super-easy to lift large, hot roasts like turkey and roast beef from the grill or from a roasting pan onto a platter. Plus, they toss a big bowl of salad in a jif. Paws are cheap, lightweight, and easy to use. Just toss them in the dishwasher for cleaning. But which ones are best?

Most of these handy tools are made from heat-resistant nylon, plastic, or stainless steel, and they are all work pretty well. The truth is, as we found with our reviews of heat-resistant gloves, most of the popular models are the market are look-a-like clones of each other. And most brands don’t stray too far from the design of the Original Bear Paws, which were released back in 1993 and forever changed how pitmasters shred or pull pork. They just make the job easier. Since then, there have been innumerable imitators, but basically the design is the same and they are used the same way. Almost all of them do a fine job of pulling meat (pork, beef, lamb) and poultry (turkey and chicken) into delicious shreds.
We tested six of the best products on the market by (as you might guess) pulling apart freshly cooked hot pork butts, which we had slightly undercooked so they were just a little more difficult to pull than a properly cooked butt. We also pulled beef briskets and turkey breasts, and every paw we used did exactly what we asked of it. Some were a little more comfortable to hold, some were easier to clean, and one in particular was amazingly fast and efficient. Check out our complete reviews and ratings below.
